Living
A new, modern district is being built in Arabianranta which will have 10 000 residents, 8 000 jobs and 6 000 students by the end of the decade. The first residents of Arabianranta moved to the district in June 2001.
Educational institutions
Arabianranta has one of Helsinki’s biggest student concentrations, composed of the students of the University of Art and Design Helsinki, the Helsinki Pop & Jazz Conservatory, the Faculty of Culture and Services of the Helsinki Polytechnic Stadia, an audiovisual educational institution and Arcada, the Finland-Swedish University of Applied Science. The university campuses in Kumpula and Viikki add to the area’s student life. Built in conjunction with the University of Art and Design Helsinki, Media Centre Lume operates as a centre for Finnish cinema and television as well as stage design.
Companies
The six office buildings of Portaali Business Park house a total of 4 000 jobs. Arabianranta is home to many small companies with connections to design and media. The most well-known company in Arabianranta, Hackman Oyj is at the forefront of Finnish design.
Recreational areas
Arabianranta is located on the beach of the Vanhakaupunki district. The scenery of the sheltered inner archipelago has retained much of its original character. The Vanhankaupunginkoski brook connects to the Vantaanjoki river. Fishing and enjoying nature in the middle of Helsinki is now a real possibility. The restored Vanhankaupunginkoski brook, along with the nature reserve and bird paradise of the Vanhankaupunginlahti bay that is connected to it, offer a unique and magnificent recreational area.
Helsinki Virtual Village is the main project of the Art and Design City Helsinki programme. The aim of the project is to form a virtual and physical village community in Arabianranta. The project has been carried out by Art and Design City Helsinki Oy, the development company for the area that bears the main responsibility for the coordination of the HVV project. Involved in the project are also the City of Helsinki, Helsinki Energy (which has built the optical fibre cable network), the area’s building owners and other operators.
